10 Necessities for Your Man Cave

Dean Batson Blog

All of my friends ask me to keep an eye out for this and for that at auction, mainly because we see some of the coolest stuff on the planet and sometimes for a heck of a deal. It’s a dangerous business if you are collector, especially with borderline hoarder tendencies. But, I do love when I find that thing someone was asking for. One of the most common “asks” is something to deck out their man cave.

I’ve researched our last few years of history and with a little help from some other auction friends I have compiled the top 10 must-haves for their (wo)man caves.

I am skipping No. 1, the TV Set. It’s too obvious and far too necessary. Every room of the house should have a TV. It’s just a fact. No. 2, a bar. If you are going to watch the game, have friends over or cry in your cave, you need a bar. I’m also skipping No. 2.5 which is a refrigerator for even more obvious reasons. No. 3 is a pinball machine. Auctions are a great place to find these babies. When they come in the gallery, everyone has to stop and look. No. 4 is a classic arcade game. Ms. Pac-Man, Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Galaga, pick your poison, but your cave has to have at least one. No. 5 is a neon beer sign or clock. Neon makes you feel like you brought the sports bar home and that’s really what it’s about. Even with the sports bar feel you can watch Game of Thrones in your Cave, but no Kardashians.

No. 6 is not for the squeamish. It’s a taxidermy mount. I know this one will not be popular with the animal lovers, which I’m one of. Nonetheless it’s a popular purchase for Man Caves. No. 7 is classic, a pool table. Auctions are a great place to find pool tables for a heck of a deal. No. 8 is Sports Memorabilia. It’s a great way to let your friends know “whose house” it is. Auctions turn up some amazing sports collections so keep a look out for your team. In fact, these items are usually the hit at Charity Auctions and great for competitive bidding. No. 9 is “The Chair.” You know, your chair. Yes, you need a sofa for your friends to chill out on, but you chair has to be just right. Archie Bunker Style. Last, but not least, is the dart board. It used to be the original video game, but that has lost its rank in my made-up list. The dart board is great fun when alcohol and bare feet are involved.

The moral of the story is, your cave is yours and what you make of it. So, when hunting for your cave check out your local Auctions and Estate Sales for great deals and unique finds. The coolest cave finds are out there. Happy spelunking!
